Michigan Child Support Formula
As part of its responsibilities, the State Court Administrative Office’s Friend of the Court Bureau (Bureau) developed a formula (guideline) for figuring child support obligation amounts. The law requires courts to use this formula when setting or changing child support obligations.

Child Support Formula Manuals
From time to time, the child support formula is reviewed and changed, and its figures updated for economic changes. When these changes occur, the Bureau issues a new Michigan Child Support Formula Manual. Michigan’s guideline consists of the manual and its most current supplement or schedules.

The Friend of the Court Bureau collects public comment for the purpose of reviewing potential changes to the formula manual. We welcome anyone’s input and always look to improve the manual. We encourage public comment to identify problems and to gather suggestions for improvement.
To appropriately document your issues, we recommend that all comments and suggestions be written. To make sure we understand what you are saying:
- Try to clearly and concisely state your issues.
- Refer to specific manual provisions or language.
- Suggest specific changes or language changes.
- Include examples or comparisons on the effect of your proposed changes.
- Include any related documentation or research.
